For 25 years, every time I finished a jug of laundry detergent, I had a whole routine: Hot water rinse. Remove the labels. Let it dry. Place it carefully in the blue recycling bin.

I even lectured my family about it. My husband would try to toss things in the trash that “should be recycled” and I’d fish them out, wash them off, and put them where they “belonged.”

I felt good about myself…

Like I was doing my part for the planet. 

Then One Tuesday, Everything Changed

I was at home, waiting for a load of laundry to finish, scrolling through my phone.

That’s when I saw an article with a headline that stopped me cold.

“Less Than 9% of All Plastic Actually Gets Recycled”

I clicked the article. And with every sentence I read, I realized how much time and effort I wasted.

It turns out that most laundry detergent jugs NEVER actually get recycled, even if you put them in the right bin.

Why?

Because of something called “contamination.” That detergent residue makes them nearly impossible to actually recycle.

But here’s the catch, even if you rinse them out, bright colored plastic jugs are usually too expensive and difficult to recycle.

So what really happens to them?

They arrive at the recycling facility, get sorted as “contaminated,” or “too bright” and go straight to the landfill anyway.

All that sorting.

All that rinsing.

It was all for nothing.
