LAUNDRY DETERGENT

5 Best Laundry Detergents To Avoid Toxic Chemicals

Most conventional laundry detergents I’ve used contain harsh chemicals that I want to avoid.

The worst of them all is 1,4 Dioxane, the EPA has linked it to cancer. I also want to avoid optical brighteners that stick to clothes, synthetic dyes, phthalates, parabens, preservatives, fillers & more.

The residue your laundry detergent leaves behind gets absorbed into your body through your skin (it’s your largest organ!), so it’s important to avoid these harsh chemicals.

I tried several different laundry detergent brands at my home, so you don’t have to. And I found the 5 best.

TLDR: Earth Breeze is the winner, because it’s made in the USA 🇺🇸, in Kentucky. With clean ingredients from the USA, and some from Canada and Europe, and zero ingredients from China. It gave me the same powerful clean I’m used to, but it has no cancer-linked 1,4 dioxane, optical brighteners, parabens, phthalates, fillers, synthetic dyes, and no preservatives! Plus it uses plastic-free packaging. I only use Earth Breeze now, and I love it.

Earth Breeze exceeded all my expectations, and it was by far my favorite laundry detergent. I happily gave it 5 stars ★★★★★.

It gives me the same powerful clean I’m used to, tackling tough stains and odors – I washed my soiled gardening clothes and my kids’ muddy soccer jerseys. Everything came out fresh and clean, it really works as advertised!

Earth Breeze uses carefully picked and effective ingredients, but it doesn’t contain harsh chemicals. It’s free of cancer-linked 1,4 dioxane, optical brighteners, parabens, phthalates, chlorine, synthetic dyes, preservatives, and fillers. No wonder it’s dermatologist-approved and hypoallergenic.

I love that it’s better for the planet, because it comes in plastic-free packaging.  You never have to worry about those huge plastic jugs again.

Finally, I was impressed by the number of 5-star reviews. Earth Breeze has the most 5-star ratings out of all laundry sheet brands, and now it has earned one from me too.

Earth Breeze has a variety of scents to choose from; the most popular are Fragrance Free and Fresh Scent. I love both of those options, but my favorite is the Fresh Scent.

This is what I recommend to everyone, and what I use at my home; Earth Breeze easily earned the #1 spot.

2. Seventh Generation

Seventh Generation came in 2nd place. Their Free & Clear formula has no added fragrance. It did a good job cleaning clothes and getting rid of smells. The ingredients are meant to be gentle, and it’s made for people with allergies.

But there are a few things we didn’t like. It has some preservatives (methylisothiazolinone and benzisothiazolinone) that can cause allergic reactions for some people.

The detergent comes in plastic bottles made mostly from recycled plastic, which is good. But many plastic bottles still end up in landfills.

We liked how clean it made the clothes. But because of the plastic bottle, Seventh Generation ended up in 2nd place.

3. Molly’s Suds

Molly Suds is our #3 pick. Like our #1 pick, Earth Breeze, it’s made with safe ingredients. But while Earth Breeze is a laundry sheet, Molly Suds comes as a powder. You just scoop the powder into your washer before adding your clothes.

In our tests, Molly Suds cleaned clothes well and used clean, gentle ingredients. You can get it with or without scent.

We don’t love the powder style—it’s easy to spill when scooping it from the bag. It’s not as easy as the Earth Breeze sheet, but it’s still better than liquid detergent.

The powder comes in a plastic bag, which isn’t great. But it’s still better than big plastic jugs of liquid soap.

Molly Suds made it to #3 because it cleans well, has good ingredients, and doesn’t use as much plastic.

4. All Free & Clear

All Free & Clear came in 4th place. When people think of laundry detergent, they often think of All. Free & Clear has the strong cleaning power you expect from the brand.

But it also has some ingredients we don’t like; for example,  benzisothiazolinone, a preservative.

All comes in a big, heavy plastic jug. That’s not great for the planet. The jug can end up in landfills or the ocean, and the weight means more pollution from shipping. Also, with liquid detergents, it’s easy to use too much, which wastes both soap and money.

We did like how well it cleaned. And judging by the thousands of reviews on Amazon, a lot of other people do too.

5. Dirty Labs

It’s a great product! I really like the aluminum containers (aluminum can be recycled over and over, so it’s better for the environment), but it costs too much to be worth it.

And The Winner Is…

The winner is EARTH BREEZE.
