5 Best Laundry Detergents To Avoid Toxic Chemicals
I’ve seen dozens of laundry detergent lists that claim to know the “best” products, and while many of these lists have good products, they always seem to leave out the most popular brands.
Especially brands that are made in the USA!
I love when companies do their best to avoid harsh chemicals like optical brighteners, cancer-linked 1,4-Dioxane, phthalates, parabens and more… But the truth is, as an American, I trust made-in-USA products the most. And I care about where the ingredients come from.
So on this list, we will look at popularity, reviews, performance, and where the products are made.
I was so shocked to not see this brand on all the lists that are floating around online, because this is the #1 laundry sheet brand on the internet.
They have the most 5-star reviews out of all the sheet brands, and they are made in the USA with clean ingredients from the USA, some from Canada, and Europe – but they have ZERO ingredients from China.
I’ve seen ads saying that Earth Breeze laundry sheets are made in China before, but it turns out that was when they were a smaller company, and they were forced to save money. But right now, they are making their laundry sheets at their Kentucky factory.
Why does this matter? It’s simple, I trust their ingredients. They use clean ingredients, they are USA lab tested, plus dermatologist-approved. They are even planning to create over 200 American jobs at their Kentucky factory, which I support!
If you haven’t seen this brand on a list before, you are missing out – the laundry sheets have no harsh chemicals like 1,4 Dioxane, optical brighteners, parabens, phthalates, dyes, bleach, or fillers. But they are ultra-concentrated and tackle tough stains and odours with ease.
I tested them on my dirtiest laundry – my gardening clothes and my kids’ muddy soccer jerseys – the clothes came out spotless, smelling fresh, and with no harsh chemical residue.

2. Seventh Generation (Assembled in the USA)
Seventh Generation came in 2nd place. Their Free & Clear formula has no added fragrance. It did a good job cleaning clothes and getting rid of smells. The ingredients are meant to be gentle, and it’s made for people with allergies.
But there are a few things we didn’t like. It has some preservatives (methylisothiazolinone and benzisothiazolinone) that can cause allergic reactions for some people.
The detergent comes in plastic bottles made mostly from recycled plastic, which is good. But many plastic bottles still end up in landfills.
It’s “Assembled in the USA”, but they don’t say where the ingredients are from.
We liked how clean it made the clothes. But because of the plastic bottle, Seventh Generation ended up in 2nd place.
3. Molly’s Suds (Made in the USA)
Molly Suds is our #3 pick. Like our #1 pick, Earth Breeze, it’s made with safe ingredients. But while Earth Breeze is a laundry sheet, Molly Suds comes as a powder. You just scoop the powder into your washer before adding your clothes.
In our tests, Molly Suds cleaned clothes well and used clean, gentle ingredients. You can get it with or without scent.
We don’t love the powder style—it’s easy to spill when scooping it from the bag. It’s not as easy as the Earth Breeze sheet, but it’s still better than liquid detergent.
The powder comes in a plastic bag, which isn’t great.
It’s made in the USA, however, we don’t have details on the origins of all the ingredients.
Molly Suds made it to #3 because it cleans well, has good ingredients.
4. All Free & Clear (Made in the USA)
All Free & Clear came in 4th place. When people think of laundry detergent, they often think of All. Free & Clear has the strong cleaning power you expect from the brand.
But it also has some ingredients we don’t like; for example, benzisothiazolinone, a preservative.
All comes in a big, heavy plastic jug. That’s not great for the planet. The jug can end up in landfills or the ocean, and the weight means more pollution from shipping. Also, with liquid detergents, it’s easy to use too much, which wastes both soap and money.
Also, this brand is made in the USA, but they seem to have some globally sourced ingredients. We couldn’t find a specific list of countries for the ingredients of this product.
We did like how well it cleaned. And judging by the thousands of reviews on Amazon, a lot of other people do too.
5. Dirty Labs (Made in the USA)
It’s a great product! I really like the aluminum containers (aluminum can be recycled over and over, so it’s better for the environment), but it costs too much to be worth it.
The ingredients are from the US, Europe, South America, Southeast Asia – they don’t give specific countries for the ingredients from Asia.
